Abstract

A marital relationship is not merely a legal bond of marriage; it is a profound human connection forged through mutual trust, love, responsibility, communication, and physical and emotional intimacy. When this equilibrium is disrupted, marital crises and personal trauma emerge, shaking the natural balance of life. Viewed through this theoretical lens, a re-examination of Chaitanya-deva’s life reveals that, beneath the surface of his spiritual renunciation, lies a deep history of marital crisis and personal trauma.

          The untimely death of his first wife, Lakshmipriya-devi, inflicted a profound psychological shock upon his life—one bearing all the hallmarks of personal trauma. Rather than confronting this grief directly, Chaitanya-deva channeled it into spiritual practice and asceticism, a path that ultimately propelled him toward an aversion to marital life and the decision to renounce the world. The poetic works of Lochan Das, Jayananda, and Murari Gupta bear witness to Lakshmipriya’s death—attributed to the bite of a venomous serpent—and the subsequent psychological transformation of Chaitanya-deva.

His relationship with his second wife, Vishnupriyadevi, was fraught with turmoil and instability. At the moment he decided to renounce worldly life, Chaitanyadeva made no lasting provisions or arrangements for her social security. Consequently, Vishnupriya remained in a liminal, deprived state: neither fully acknowledged as a wife nor entirely cast aside. Her human suffering was effectively buried beneath the glorification of silent wifely devotion and endurance found within the literature of the Chaitanya Bhakti tradition. From this perspective, Chaitanyadeva’s renunciation is not merely a chronicle of personal liberation, but also a history of a woman’s lifelong solitude and deprivation.

           Thus, viewing Chaitanyadeva’s life through the prism of marital crisis and personal trauma brings into sharp focus both his human complexities and those aspects of his conduct that warrant critical scrutiny. While trauma may have indeed altered the trajectory of his spiritual journey, it does not, in itself, provide moral legitimacy for the abandonment of his responsibilities toward his wife. Therefore, even within the framework of Bhakti ideals, placing Chaitanyadeva in the dock of human marital conduct renders his life a subject of even greater realism, complexity, and intellectual contemplation.
