Abstract
In 1947, along with gaining independence, the country was also divided. And the partition was done on the basis of religion. The partition gave birth to two separate states, Hindustan and Pakistan. As a result, during the partition, numerous uprooted Bengali Hindus fled from East Pakistan and migrated to various states of India such as West Bengal, Tripura and Assam. Since then, the migration has continued more or less. However, during the Liberation War in 1971, a large number of people fled and came back to India and Assam. As a result, as the socio-economic and political sectors of Assam changed drastically, a crisis arose. The Assamese then started the 'Bengal Kheda' movement to resolve the crisis. The Assam government sent notices to Bengalis door to door to prove their Indian citizenship. If they could not prove their citizenship, they were sent out of the country. A tragic picture of what happened to them wherever they were sent is seen in Kumar Ajit Dutt's story 'Ajana Pathe'. In the story in question, a police car carrying Madhav's family and a few others, unable to show proof of Indian citizenship, sets out for some unknown purpose. They are dropped off in a deserted place without any people. The fate of all these people there is tragic. Once they come to India as refugees. They have to become refugees again.
