বনফুলের ‘শ্রীমধুসূদন’ : এক বিবর্তিত সময়ের প্রতিবিম্ব/ Banophul’s ‘SriMadhusudan’ : A Reflection of an Evolving Time

Abstract

Balaichand Mukhopadhyay, better known by his pen name ‘Banophul’, is widely recognized in Bengali literature as a short story writer. However, the smooth and effective presentation of his play ‘Srimadhusudan’, published in 1940, proves that he was also a successful playwright. In this play, while narrating various events from the life of Madhusudan, the playwright also brings out many aspects of the contemporary society. The drama attempts to depict the mid-nineteenth century or its surrounding period.

            In fact, the time of Madhusudan’s emergence in the nineteenth century was one of extreme turmoil. The clash between traditional and modern ideas had greatly disrupted social life. As a result, in the second half of the nineteenth century, during the Bengal Renaissance, the instability present in contemporary society also had a significant impact on Madhusudan’s personal life. In the play under discussion, the playwright portrays various realistic aspects of the society centered around Calcutta of that time. From the first half of the nineteenth century, issues such as the moral decline of the youth in India, the caste system, and the degradation of women had become increasingly prominent, and these are described throughout the play.

           Essentially, at the same time, it is worth mentioning that during that period, some young men educated in English became quite arrogant. They considered everything other than English literature and culture to be insignificant. The youth of Bengal began to value rational thinking, logic, and scientific awareness more than ancient beliefs, traditional customs, blind faith, and superstitions.

          However, alongside these positive aspects, the youth were not free from negative influences. A section of them, in the name of progressiveness, began to mock and ridicule everything related to Hinduism. They openly engaged in smoking, drinking alcohol, and consuming forbidden meat. During this time, many young people tried to modernize their thoughts and ideas under the influence of the young teacher of Hindu College, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio. Under his leadership, the Young Bengal group was formed. Deeply influenced by Western ideals, this group of young people strongly protested against practices such as caste discrimination, untouchability, oppression of women, gender inequality, and forced labor.

          All these harsh realities of nineteenth-century society have been realistically portrayed in the play. Through the depiction of Madhusudan’s personal life, the play vividly presents the social environment of the nineteenth century, making it a valuable document of that era. In my discussion, based on Banophul’s play ‘Srimadhusudan’, I will attempt to describe these realistic aspects of contemporary social life from a descriptive perspective.
