Abstract

Bimal Kar is a pioneer in the Bengali literary genre of the 1940s and 1950s. In a turbulent time, when the edifice of culture resting on a broken economy was crumbling, the human mind and its various tensions were giving a different dimension to human relationships. Bimal Kar has captured the subtle ruptures of those underlying relationships through the use of vast details of broken words, and has made them deeply consonant with the universe by closely integrating them. Issues like human spirituality, loneliness, love, sexuality, desires, problems and crises, the simplicity of life or multidimensional complexity have become deeply consonant and multifaceted in the well-marked parallel imagery of the universe. In some cases, the universe has indeed created a contrasting reflection of life in opposing imagery. But its scope is very small. But in most cases, the universe has remained engaged in creating parallel reflections of life in Bimal Kar's stories. The storyteller has made the subtle feelings that could not be expressed in words, not even by using the details of words, shine through each aspect of the universe, the context, and the imagery. As a result, a sense of proportion has come into the story, a deeper life message has come behind simple words, a multidimensional art form of the subconscious. The new story-variation that we see in Bimal Kar, which goes beyond language and highlights spirituality or mystery, has been seen in very few storytellers of his time. Bimal Kar's popular stories bear an example of how a very ordinary life-context can become a pervasive story-element in the context of the universe.
