Abstract
Mahasweta Devi has powerfully established the tradition of social realism in Bengali literature. Her literary works repeatedly bring out the real picture of the struggles, hunger, poverty, and exploitation faced by marginalized people in society. This research paper analyzes her short story ‘Jatudhan’. In this story, the harsh reality of society is vividly portrayed, where rice is not merely food but emerges as a symbol of life itself. At the same time, the author highlights the economic and social exploitation of indigenous communities.
The objective of this paper is to analyze class inequality and the human crisis present in society. Mahasweta Devi is a unique treasure in the world of Bengali literature. Through her writings, she has very powerfully depicted the realities of marginalized people, indigenous life, and state neglect. This paper will discuss in detail the theme, characters, symbolism, social significance, and the author’s perspective in the story ‘Jatudhan’.
