Abstract

The quest for truth and the resolution of mystery are primal human instincts, rooted in the Indian subcontinent as far back as the Vedic era’s "Charas" (spies). This essay traces the evolution of female detectives from historical reality to literary icons, highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of women writers in Bengali mystery literature.

          The journey began globally with Kate Warne, the first female professional detective at the Pinkerton Agency in 1850, who paved the way for gender inclusivity. While Western fiction celebrated Miss Marple and Nancy Drew, Bengali literature underwent its own transformation. Despite a patriarchal start dominated by Feluda and Byomkesh, women’s contributions emerged as early as 1887.

          Sarabala Dasi is identified as the first Bengali woman detective writer; her story Ghari Churi (1310 BS) utilized sensory observation and a ‘sixth sense’. The study further tracks the shift from male-authored female characters to authentic portrayals by women. Key figures include Prabhabati Devi Saraswati, Nalini Das, and Suchitra Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya’s Mitin Mashi remains a definitive symbol of the modern professional woman balancing domesticity and justice.

          Drawing parallels with real-life pioneers like Rajani Pandit, India’s first female private investigator, the essay argues that the "female gaze" introduces unique psychological depth to the genre. Ultimately, it celebrates the transition of women from mere assistants to primary agents of justice.
