Abstract

This research paper attempts to explore the variety of adjectives usage in Jibanananda Das’s selected poems from the collection of poetry ‘Banalata Sen’. Along with this, it investigates the similarity and dissimilarity of the simile with the degree of adjectives. Within the brief scope of this article, five poems have been selected from the thirty poems in the collection of ‘Banalata Sen’, from which example of adjectives have been taken.

Adjectives are a class of word identification in morphology, which is part of linguistics. An adjective is a word that describes the fault, quality, state or quantity of a noun or verb, which is known to all of us. There are various classes of adjectives. Three categories are more common: noun adjectives, verb adjectives and adjectival adjectives. Sub-classes of these have also been determined. Attempts have been made to provide examples according to those classes from the selected poems.

As a sensually conscious poet, the varied use of adjectives has become the main support of his poetry. And adjectives often transition into similes in his hands, which is actually the primary form of imagery. In this context, the variety of colours in Jibanananda Das’s poetry, based on time and form, has also come up for discussion.
