Abstract

A notable poet-personality in the modern Bengali poetry movement after Rabindra is Subhash Mukherjee. The poet emerged during the extreme crisis of national life in the forties of the twentieth century. Contemporary society and time deeply controlled his creation. This consciousness of the times is embodied in poetry to a greater extent than it is in his prose writings. Abandoning the path of conventional romanticism, he made the harsh social reality the main subject of his poetry. He was a humanist poet. He felt deeply pained by the suffering of the common people, exploited and oppressed in all aspects of society, economy, and politics. Therefore, he dreamed of a social system without exploitation to give true dignity to the humiliated people. He thought that a day would come when the cry of the aching, deprived, human soul would find its way to liberation through the path of class struggle. Poet Subhash Mukherjee dreamed of this new era or red-tinged day throughout his life. As a result, the tone that is particularly striking in his poetry in bringing about that desired day is protest. This protest is a protest against all kinds of exploitation, against hypocrisy, and against lack of ethics and morality. The optimistic poet's language of protest was not only unilinear; it was multidimensional. While protesting against the molten, stagnant, selfish social system, he directly attacked it, as well as indirectly inflicted a severe blow of satire. Again, in the case of writing love poems, he abandoned the conventional path and remained steadfast in his ideals.
