Abstract

Language is a medium for the expression of human emotions. It has various artistic forms; one of its most important forms is the proverb. A proverb illustrates the cognitive articulation of one’s daily life experiences. This experiential knowledge, filled with polish, conciseness, and emotional depth, adopts an artistic form. It comes from the mind of an individual and is eventually approved by the collective understanding of society. These expressions have been traditionally known within the community as proverbs. Therefore, a proverb is an intellectual, incisive, clear, concise, and lively medium for expressing the real truths of human life, steeped in artistic sensibility. Primarily, the origin and circulation of proverbs occur within the oral domain. Proverbs facilitate the effortless transmission, propagation, and preservation of the diverse and manifold experiences accumulated over the course of a long time. Every human society possesses its own unique set of life experiences; yet, in certain instances, the life experiences shared across nearly all human societies worldwide bear striking similarities. The central theme of the present essay is the linguistic perspective of Rajbanshi proverbs. Here, the proverbs prevalent within the Rajbanshi community have been analyzed and evaluated through the lens of linguistics. Since proverbs are created orally, they embody the spoken language of the people; consequently, the oral character of the language—rather than its written form—is predominantly reflected in proverbs. Accordingly, this essay is presented based on an examination of the linguistic elements of the Rajbanshi language as manifested within its proverbs. From a linguistic perspective, Rajbanshi proverbs have been analyzed from various linguistic viewpoints. The phonological, morphological, semantic, syntactic, and contextual aspects of Rajbanshi proverbs, along with their vocabulary, have been discussed from this linguistic viewpoint. However, it is important to note that beyond the mentioned topics, proverbs include several other linguistic features that have not been added in this discussion. This forms one of the limitations of the present essay.
