Abstract

This study examines the intricate relationship between language and culture, positing that proficiency in a language enhances our comprehension of diverse cultures. Despite globalisation's role in bridging distances, it often fails to facilitate an understanding of the deeper cultural elements, such as values and social norms. The fundamental importance of cultural understanding resides in its capacity to dismantle stereotypes and prejudices. The paper contends that language transcends its function as a mere conduit for information exchange; it encapsulates cultural heritage and influences our worldview. By employing concepts such as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, the study illustrates the impact of language on our perception of reality. Through the lenses of anthropology, linguistics, and international relations, the paper demonstrates that language acquisition fosters a deeper understanding of other cultures. It addresses various communication styles and highlights how linguistic differences can lead to misunderstandings. Language is often regarded as a reflection of culture, suggesting that one can discern cultural characteristics through linguistic expression. Another metaphor frequently employed to illustrate the relationship between language and culture is that of an iceberg. In this analogy, the visible portion represents language, encompassing a small segment of culture, while the larger, submerged part signifies the hidden aspects of culture. These metaphors collectively convey the intricate interplay between language and culture. The paper concludes by emphasising the importance of preserving languages and promoting multilingualism for global harmony. It further explores the interconnection between culture and language, introducing novel metaphors to elucidate this relationship. The study asserts that language and culture are mutually dependent for their existence. Revitalising a language involves facilitating its evolution alongside its speakers. By comprehending a language, we gain insights into a people's history and mindset, thereby enhancing relatability. This paper argues that educational institutions should prioritise language learning as a fundamental aspect of fostering global citizenship. Such an approach will facilitate a deeper understanding of diverse cultures.
