Abstract

In the post-COVID landscape of Bengali theater, a new diversity of themes has emerged, accompanied by a distinct current of anti-establishment sentiment. Translations and stage adaptations of foreign plays are currently being produced to address issues concerning women's liberation, individual autonomy, and the actions of the government. Furthermore, in the context of challenging the establishment, revivals of Utpal Dutt's plays have gained significant prominence. Additionally, playwrights and directors such as Sourav Palodhi, Debesh Chattopadhyay, Sima Mukhopadhyay, Suman Mukhopadhyay, Anirban Bhattacharya, Kaushik Sen, and Debashish Roy are presenting their diverse repertoire of plays on stage. Among them, Debashish Roy's plays are currently enjoying the greatest appreciation from audiences on the Kolkata stage. In terms of both thematic content and theatrical form, he has positively distinguished himself from his contemporaries. Underlying this success is a history of long-standing dedication and perseverance. In this article, we shall explore these very aspects.
