Abstract

Folk literature serves as a mirror reflecting the essence of the nation. It provides invaluable insights into the mental framework of a society and embodies the environmental and social contemplations of its rural singers. Among the rich tapestry of folk literature, feminine songs or wedding songs occupy a distinguished place. In this respect, the folk literature of North Bengal in Bangladesh holds significant cultural importance. This research aims to explore the social status of women and social reality in the Rangpur region of North Bengal, Bangladesh, where women play a crucial role as bearers and transmitters of social culture. Their words and songs reveal the deepest demands, customs, rules, and social injustices in society. This article appropriately highlights various aspects of the Rangpur region and the Bengali mentality, including dowry practices, marriage breakdowns, relationships between family members, marriage matchmakers, the groom's mother's anxieties about the new bride, child marriage, and the tradition of viewing the bride.
