Abstract
Shishu Shahityik ‘Mahasweta Devi’ - this phase may initially surprise readers, as her name is most often associated with a powerful voice of resistance and social justice. She is widely recognized for representing the struggles of marginalized communities and for blending activism with literature to create a force of human awakening. Celebrated for works such as Aranyer Adhikar, Hajar Churashir Maa and Draupadi, it may seem unlikely that such a writer also contributed significantly to children’s literature. Yet, Mahasweta Devi wrote extensively for young readers, producing remarkable works like Armani Chanpar Gachh (1968), Ganga Theke Sagar (1975), Birsa Munda (1981), Bagha Shikari (1986), Tutul (1991), and Dakate Kahini (1998). A closer reading of these stories reveals that she did not rely on conventional fairy-tale motifs of kings, queens, and magical abundance. Instead, she narrated the lives of ordinary people—especially those who, though seemingly simple, possess extraordinary courage and humanity. Their stories, grounded in reality and are no less engaging or adventurous than fairy tales. Her primary literary identity remains rooted in protest and social commitment, her children’s writings create a unique imaginative space shaped by empathy, realism, and deep human values.
This article This article is a humble attempt to shed light this relatively unexplored dimension of Mahasweta Devi, bringing attention to her remarkable yet often overlooked contribution to children’s literature.
