Abstract

In Sanskrit Literature Mahakavi Kalidas, the greatest dramatist and poet, is recognized as the poet of similes. Very skillfully he has portrayed the natural and psychological transformation of the character of Shakuntala is ‘Abhijanashakuntalam’. The ornamentation of his similes is the best and the sweetness of his poetry, his arrangement of words, and his descriptions have given him extraordinary fame. His drama Abhijanashakuntalam is a special example of distinguished literature. Through the character of Shankuntala, the poet has expressed the penance of love. Among his many immortal creations, Abhiganashkuntalam is an unparalled creation of Indian Literature, love and aesthetics. The profound emotion of the drama, the natural description of nature, the appeal of human love and the poetic presentation of language all together make the play a vivid document of the dramatist’s supreme excellence.

          The linguist William jones was an appreciator of the acsthetic qualities of Abhijanashakuntalam. Vidyasagar Made a translation of the sentiments of this drama. Again, Rishi Bankimchandra and the world poet Rabindranath analyzed Shakuntala from different perspectives. In the present essay, the character of Shakuntala has been analyzed in the thoughts of Vidyasagar, Bankimchandra and Rabindranath.
