Abstract

In the nineteenth century, the condition of women was clearly shown in Bengali literature of that time. Most writings presented women within the Hindu joint family and domestic life. Women were seen as symbols of unity and peace in the family. It was believed that they could protect society from the bad effects of Western culture. Their main quality was self-sacrifice, especially in love and motherhood. Because of this, women were treated as symbols of the nation.

         Writers like Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and others showed women mainly inside the household. They were ideal, disciplined, and devoted to family duties. At the same time, writers were thinking about how to develop patriotism among people. Nationalist leaders gave women the duty to protect Indian culture and values. They said women should not blindly follow Western lifestyle.

         In the early nineteenth century, some educated people praised English women for their household skills and education. They wanted Indian women to be educated and to come out of strict household boundaries. But later, with the rise of nationalism, these same people started supporting traditional Indian values again. Women were asked to follow old customs and maintain cultural purity.

         This created a comparison between ancient ideal women and modern women. Even journals like Tattvabodhini Patrika criticized women who followed Western ideas. Women’s education was allowed, but it was limited. The main aim was to make them good mothers, good wives, and good homemakers.

         Society needed role models for women. Ideal women were chosen from mythology and history, such as Sita and Savitri. Qualities like purity, devotion, and loyalty to the husband were seen as the highest virtues. Even though practices like sati were banned and widow remarriage was allowed, literature often continued to support self-sacrifice and strict life for widows.

          So, the way women were shown in Bengali literature was closely related to their real condition in society. It helps us understand the thinking and attitudes towards women in the nineteenth century and the ideal image of women at that time.
