Abstract

Rabindranath Tagore is one of the pioneer creators of the modern short story in Bengali literature. In fact, it was through his hands that the modern Bengali short story flourished. In most of his short stories, Rabindranath depicted the joys and sorrows of the lives of ordinary people. Alongside this, the subtle complexities of the human mind, various conflicts, and inner turmoil are also portrayed. Very few short story writers have highlighted the various forms of social oppression faced by women in their stories quite like he did. In this essay under discussion, we will attempt to highlight the diverse dimensions of women mentioned in Rabindranath’s short stories. Sometimes she is rebellious, and at other times, her unfulfilled love fails to reach maturity. Women's social dignity, the pain of unexpressed love, and loneliness — all have been captured in his short stories. Women are also human beings, not commodities; they have their own likes and dislikes, and society must give importance to those needs instead of forcing anything upon them—he has tried to bring out all of these themes in his stories. In our discussed essay, we will analyze these various positions of women in Rabindranath's short stories through a selection of a few stories.
