Abstract

Debesh Ray is one of the most significant novelists in the tradition of modern Bengali literature. Among his numerous novels, Janma (Birth) occupies a distinctive position for its exploration of the psychological, social, and medical dimensions of modern life. The novel is set against the backdrop of Kolkata during a period of rapid social transformation, when the traditional joint family system gradually disintegrated and gave way to an urban, individualistic, and corporate-oriented society. This transition generated a range of new crises that became integral to modern existence, and Janma is a powerful literary representation of these emerging realities.

         The novel primarily examines the complexities of modern married life, centering on the desire for parenthood and the emotional, psychological, and ethical conflicts that arise from infertility. Ray vividly portrays how the question of having a child reshapes the perspectives, emotional worlds, and decision-making processes of both men and women. The novel reveals the gendered nature of these experiences, highlighting the differences in the ways husbands and wives perceive, negotiate, and respond to reproductive challenges.

         A distinctive feature of Janma is its integration of modern medical science into the narrative. The novel explores scientific methods of diagnosis and treatment alongside the anxieties, uncertainties, and moral dilemmas associated with reproductive medicine. In doing so, Ray transforms the human body into a central site of literary inquiry, making Janma an important example of body-conscious fiction in Bengali literature.

         Debesh Ray further developed this thematic concern in four subsequent novels that also engage with the relationship between the human body, medicine, and modernity. This study undertakes a comparative analysis of Janma and these related works to identify the continuity and evolution of Ray's literary vision. It also examines how, during the 1990s, Ray broadened the scope of his fiction by incorporating unconventional subjects and interdisciplinary concerns. Within this broader trajectory of his creative development, Janma emerges as a landmark novel that redefines the representation of modernity, the body, and reproductive experience in Bengali fiction.
