Unity in diversity is one of the unique features of Indian society and culture. But this diversity is currently facing destruction due to various reasons. This issue has gained special importance in Mahashweta Devi’s impartial perspective. She is like a mother to the marginalized tribal communities. She always stood by the downtrodden. She wielded her pen for their rightful existence and the establishment of their dignity. Mahashweta Devi has created a vast literary treasure about those who are lost, endangered and facing destruction due to the impact of the mainstream of independent Indian society, whose social and cultural fabric has been wounded. ‘Suraj Gagrai’ is a novel of this genre. In it, Mahashweta Devi’s thoughts and working methods reflect the strong desire for the establishment of Ho society, culture and their just rights.
