Abstract

This paper examines how the life and society of the Raniganj–Asansol coalfield have been represented in Bengali fiction. It explores the ways in which Bengali writers have documented the growth of the coal mining industry while portraying the everyday experiences, struggles, and aspirations of the people who lived and worked in the mining region. Although Bengali literature has long reflected industrial life through narratives centred on jute mills, tea plantations, and other industries, coal mining remained largely absent from literary discourse until Shailajananda Mukhopadhyay brought the subject into the mainstream through his pioneering stories. His writings marked the beginning of a new literary tradition, which was later enriched by authors who had direct knowledge of the coalfields and were able to present a more authentic and nuanced picture of mining life.

The study traces the historical development of the Raniganj–Asansol coal belt from the discovery of coal in the eighteenth century to the nationalization of the coal mines in 1973. It shows how the expansion of the coal industry transformed the region into one of eastern India's major industrial centres, attracting workers from different parts of the country and giving rise to a culturally diverse mining society. At the same time, the paper highlights the harsh realities of life in the coalfields under colonial and private ownership, including unsafe working conditions, labour exploitation, inadequate wages, gender inequality, and the systematic denial of workers' rights. It also discusses the emergence of trade union movements and the collective struggles that sought to improve the lives of mine workers.

Particular attention is given to the works of Shailajananda Mukhopadhyay, Prafulla Kumar Singha, Debadatta Roy, Birendra Kumar Bandyopadhyay, and Debnath Bandyopadhyay. Through their novels and short stories, these writers vividly portray the lives of coal miners, industrial accidents, labour movements, social injustice, and the resilience of mining communities in the face of adversity. Their literary works preserve not only the history of the coalfields but also the emotions, hopes, fears, and everyday realities of people whose identities were closely tied to the mining industry.

The paper argues that coalfield literature occupies a unique position in Bengali literature because it brings together historical reality and creative imagination. These works are not merely regional narratives; they are valuable literary and social documents that illuminate the interconnected histories of industry, labour, politics, and human survival. By giving voice to communities that have often remained on the margins of mainstream history, Bengali coalfield literature offers a deeper understanding of the human consequences of industrialization and demonstrates the remarkable endurance of the human spirit.
