Abstract

‘If only I had been born in the era of Kalidasa’ (1)—poet Rabindranath Tagore lamented not having been born in that age. Yet, had the poet truly been born in Kalidasa’s time, he might have sought to discover the essence of that era—for the advent of such a peerless genius, a man of supreme intellect, defines the very spirit of his age.

          Novelist Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay never viewed history as something dry or lifeless; instead, by infusing it with his own imagination and emotion, he presented historical eras in his novels with remarkable vividness. As readers delve into his works, the events seem to unfold right before their eyes, and the dialogues of the characters feel audible. He possessed the unique ability to effortlessly weave the sights, flavors, colors, and scents of history into the fabric of his novels.

          Tapan Bandyopadhyay’s voluminous novel, Upama Kalidasasya could have been a truly enjoyable read had the author avoided anachronisms and refrained from the excessive use of Sanskrit verses. After all, the vast corpus of Sanskrit literature is available for those wishing to explore Kalidasa’s poetry and plays; readers can easily access both the original texts and their translations there. Notably, there is already a magnificent, widely acclaimed novel about Kalidasa’s life penned by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.
