Abstract

The early to mid-twentieth century was a period of major transformation in India. The rise of nationalism against British rule, the World Wars, humanitarian crises, the Partition of Bengal, the Non-Cooperation Movement, the spread of socialist ideas, and finally the trauma of Partition deeply influenced contemporary writers. At the same time, Western education, urbanization, scientific progress, individualism, and questions of women’s freedom introduced new ideas that shaped literary expression.

             Within this context, Bengali literature entered a new phase, reflecting modern realities. Literary journals like Kallol, Kalikalam, Pragati, Dhoopchhaya, Parichay, Kobita, and Purvasha helped establish a modern poetic movement beyond Rabindranath Tagore’s influence. One of the key figures of this era was Jibanananda Das, whose works appeared in most major journals. Before discussing him in detail, it is important to consider his family background, literary practice, and his connection with the Kallol movement.
