Abstract
Dialogue is the very lifeblood of drama. Through dialogue, a playwright not only constructs the plot and develops the characters but also reveals the inner world of the dramatis personae. A playwright's success largely depends on the quality of his dramatic dialogue. While conscious effort and careful craftsmanship are essential, the creation of truly effective dialogue ultimately requires innate talent. Manoj Mitra possessed this rare gift, which made him one of the most popular and widely acclaimed playwrights among his contemporaries.
In nearly a hundred plays, Manoj Mitra portrayed people from diverse social, economic, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds, giving each character an authentic and appropriate mode of speech. A considerable number of his plays are set against rural backdrops and revolve around village life. Accordingly, the dialogues of these characters are enriched with regional vocabulary and dialectal expressions. In his notable play Chakbhanga Madhu, the characters Matla and Jata speak in the dialect of southern Bengal. Similarly, Gandhakali in Paliye Beray uses the same southern Bengali speech pattern.
In his most celebrated play, Sajano Bagan, Manoj Mitra employed the dialect of the Khulna region, familiar from his childhood, in the dialogues of Bancharam. Bancharam's speech is further distinguished by rustic pronunciations and the incorporation of several English words in their colloquial forms. These features have made Bancharam one of Manoj Mitra's most unique and unforgettable creations.
In Ami Madan Bolchhi, the dialect of the Hasnabad region is prominently used. The entire play consists of Madan's extended monologue. Through his remarkable skill in crafting dialogue, the playwright succeeds in sustaining the attention of both the audience and listeners throughout the play. The use of Bengali dialects also contributes significantly to its humour. The dialogues of Ataullah in Paliye Beray and Chhana in Smritisudha are excellent examples of this comic effect.
Manoj Mitra also introduced several non-Bengali business-class characters into his plays. Their dialogues, blending Bengali with Hindi, create an engaging and entertaining linguistic flavour. In some plays, Muslim characters speak in a language heavily influenced by Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Hindi. Numerous examples of this can be found in Galpo Hekim Saheb.
The play Devi Sarpamasta is centred on the folk goddess Sarpamasta, worshipped in the forested and hilly regions. In the dialogues and songs of characters such as Dahuk and Kundala, the playwright combines their local dialect with the literary language Brajabuli.
Indeed, Manoj Mitra's plays provide rich material for sociolinguistic study, demonstrating how linguistic forms evolve alongside changes in social and cultural contexts. While composing dialogues, the playwright was not merely concerned with linguistic variation; he also ensured that every dialogue remained perfectly suited to its dramatic situation and environment.
To reveal the psychological depths of his characters, Manoj Mitra frequently employed long speeches. Yet, their length never slows the dramatic pace. Instead, these dialogues possess a poetic quality that enhances both characterization and the aesthetic appeal of the plays. At the same time, his works also contain numerous short dialogues. In Dampati, for example, the exchanges between the husband and wife during their quarrels.
