Abstract

Bhagirath Mishra is a distinguished writer with a unique voice in contemporary Bengali literature. His debut collection of short stories, ‘Gigansia o Onyanyo Golpo’, was published by 'Amrita Lok Prakashani', West Midnapore, in 1983. He remains highly active in his creative pursuits. Over the years, he has authored numerous short stories and novels, most of which draw their inspiration from the lives of the Dalit, the neglected in short, the marginalized sections of society. The term 'marginalized groups' primarily refers to those whose lives have been distorted by the inevitable consequences of imposed societal power structures and who have fallen victim to the dominance of specific groups. Bhagirath Mishra’s works both short stories and novels centered on marginalized lives are characterized by a rich diversity of themes. An analysis of these works reveals that the personal and family lives of marginalized individuals encompassing love and estrangement, marital dynamics, greed and desire, simplicity and tenderness, as well as their political consciousness, religious practices, beliefs, and economic realilives are all vividly reflected within the narrative fabric of his writing.
