Abstract

Ramendrasundar Trivedi was one of the foremost pioneers in developing a scientific temperament among the masses by writing elegant essays in the Bengali language. Not only in science, but his contributions to philosophy, society, religion, and literature also remain brilliantly alive in the minds of educated Bengalis. The quest for unity within the diverse Indian culture and the analysis of differences between the East and the West found a prominent place in his various essays. Therefore, Ramendrasundar Trivedi is an unforgettable name in the awakening of twentieth-century Bengali intellect. Looking at the life of Ramendrasundar Trivedi, it is evident that he deeply dedicated himself to both institutional and non-institutional education throughout his life. Consequently, it was only natural that his lifelong knowledge and experience would make his creative world richer and more diverse. However, despite being a student of science, Ramendrasundar did not make any fundamental scientific discoveries. This was because he truly believed that to understand science, observation, rather than mere rote learning, is necessary. Therefore, the widespread promotion and expansion of his scientific pursuits took place in the realm of literature. Ramendrasundar had a profound affection for the Bengali language. Making this very Bengali language the medium for practicing science is his unforgettable achievement. At a time when literary practice in Bengali was extremely difficult, Ramendrasundar presented complex, dry, and information-heavy subjects like science in a highly fluid manner in Bengali. This arduous feat of his is what makes us remember and reflect upon him today.
