Abstract
Ritwik Ghatak occupies a unique position in Indian cinema for his innovative cinematic language and his profound engagement with social realities. While he is primarily remembered as a filmmaker of Partition, displacement, and Bengali identity, his contribution to the representation of Indigenous communities in Indian cinema remains comparatively understudied. This paper examines the cinematic portrayal of Indigenous life in Ghatak’s works, tracing a trajectory from his early documentary practices to Ajantrik (1958). It argues that Ghatak’s engagement with Indigenous communities was not limited to ethnographic representation; rather, Indigenous people, their language, and their worldview became integral to the philosophical and aesthetic structure of his films.
The paper further situates Ghatak’s cinematic practice within his broader commitment to representing marginalized communities. By granting Indigenous people and their language a dignified and organic presence on screen, Ghatak challenged dominant cultural hierarchies and anticipated later debates on linguistic and cultural representation in Indian media. The study concludes that his films expanded the aesthetic possibilities of Indian cinema while simultaneously articulating a political commitment to cultural plurality and social inclusion. In this regard, Ritwik Ghatak emerges as a pioneering filmmaker whose sensitive portrayal of Indigenous life and language established a significant milestone in the history of Indian cinema.
