Abstract
In a changing society, there is an evident, irrepressible desire for the constant emergence of fascinating new talents within the realm of human thought. Achieving this goal allows one to gauge its true significance. Driven by social necessity, people are now openly revealing details they once considered strictly private—a trend exemplified by the phenomenon of ‘marriage advertisement’. Historically, matchmaking relied on intermediaries ghataks, relatives, and the preferences of family elders, though exceptions like newspaper ads or personal choices did exist. Today, the dominance of family elders in arranging marriages is giving way to a growing trend of using newspaper advertisements, social media campaigns, and digital platforms—specifically matrimonial sites—to find partners. These advertisements present not only the personal details of the prospective bride or groom but also information regarding their parents' financial status and the exchange of gifts or dowry. While initially grouped with other classified ads, marriage advertisements have evolved into a distinct, mass-oriented category in their own right, reflecting the public's growing interest. Marriage, an institution born of the union between a man and a woman driven by both social and personal imperatives, has undergone changes that expose individual desires to the outside world. The commercialization of marriage has spurred people to actively seek life partners through social media advertisements—a practice that began with the first such ads appearing in periodicals during the early 1870s. While marriage advertisements were always a point of interest, they have since secured a prominent and attractive spot in the Sunday editions of newspapers. Through the skillful use of language, writing style, and colour, these ads are crafted to be visually appealing within limited space; simultaneously, the maintenance of personal identity records helps establish credibility. This discussion attempts to outline the evolution of marriage advertisements from the past to the present, while highlighting the transformation of marriage from a ‘sacred bond’ into a concept shaped by a market-driven economy.
