Abstract

Documenting travel experiences seems to be an innate human instinct—a practice that has persisted since ancient times. Beyond merely describing the places, times, and contexts of the journey, the traveler's experiences transform these elements into subjects of both history and literature. Not only in ancient times but also in the twentieth century, Bengali literature has enriched the global canon of travel writing with several memorable works. Prominent among them is ‘Hey Purno Tobo Choroner Kache’ (1985) by Nabaneeta Dev Sen. Although replete with deeply personal details, the book offers a meticulous account of the ‘Char Dham’ pilgrimage, interwoven with the emotions and sentiments of a contemplative heart. Every line of the author's narrative holds elements that satisfy a poet's thirst for beauty, lending this book the stature of fine travel literature. Nabaneeta Dev Sen traveled to various parts of the world in the course of her teaching career, and accounts of these experiences have been penned in several travelogues. She has traveled to the Maha Kumbh and the Char Dham pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand—not merely for professional reasons, but out of a genuine love for nature and a quest to discover the soul of India. These writings are not simply accounts of travel experiences, descriptions of nature’s beauty, or discussions filled with logistical details; rather, the author’s spontaneous, humorous narrative style captivates the reader with an intense, magnetic pull. They are, at once, travel literature and delightful, light hearted prose.
