Abstract

Partition is a very important issue. During the partition of India in 1947, many people came to India from East Bengal due to communal riots. Here they came as refugees. But their refugee life became very difficult. Many people died of hunger and disease. The novel "Jalpaihati" written by Jibanananda Das was written during this time.Through the characters of the novel he also mixed elements of his own life. Bengal was then due to Hindu Muslim communal riots,Unsettled. The central character of the novel, Nishith, comes to Calcutta in search of a teaching job. Here, the complex economic and social aspects of the period are described through various characters.
