Evolution of Woman’s Poetry in Modern Bengali Poetry : Uniqueness of Geeta Chattopadhyay/ আধুনিক বাংলা কবিতায় নারীর কবিতার বিবর্তন : গীতা চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের স্বাতন্ত্র্য

Abstract

In ancient Indian tradition, women were considered as goddesses. In various scriptures, that woman was considered to be the receiver of maternal power. Who holds the child in the womb and grows it little by little and shows the light of the world. Women are not satisfied only with giving birth to children. Despite doing all the work in the world, their foreheads are scroned and humiliated. Patriarchal society tends to continuously opperss women. But the eyes of man and woman are not afraid and move forward. Some of them are women who use their writing and speech as a language of protest. This trend has continued since the thirties till the present time. Kamini Roy, Man kumari Basu, Kusumkumari Das are among the women poets who entered the world of poetry in the early thirties. Although the language of their poetry is not strong, the history of the life of married women has been revealed in their writtings. Later the voice of women poets changed from the 1950's onwards. Poet Kabita Singh of the 50's, Mallika Sengupta of the 70's has a strong tone of poetry. What the have observed in their personal experience in the surrounding life is represent in the poem. The social positions of women observed by them at that time resulted in short puns and insults in the poem. On the other hand, in the poetry of poet Chaitali Chattopadhyay or Sutapa Sengupta of the 1980's we find a different view of women. Altho the language of their poetry is not intense the individual needs of women have been caught repeatedly. But 60's poet Geeta chattopadhyay's language, of protest is distinct from others. As she was born into a conservative sophisticated family, her writings reveal a different picture of the antapur women. Not only the women's life of antapur, she has established the multi dimensional aspects of women with her own creative power. The confined life of housewives, individual physical feelings etc. Masculinity is not always performed by men but also by women as we often find such instances in various poems of poets. Her protest language is very mild yet effective. It is her gentle manner of speaking as well as deep thoughtfulness that gives life to her poetry. To understand her poems, one has to dive deep into the heart. The poet’s protest is expressed without using any raised tone. This has emerged prominently in the discussion.
