Abstract

Medieval poet Bharatchandra Roy in the history of Bengali literature. He is a poet of the juncture of medieval and modern era. The background of his poetry is in the seventeenth century when the Mughal rule firmly established its supremacy in Bengal. And the strong form of feudalism in the social life of Bengal made the life of common people miserable. Bharatchandra's poetic pursuits during that turbulent period. Bharatchandra's self-sacrifice to become a 'Rayagunakar' by overcoming the anarchy of the society-state-family where the society-state-family tries to block the poet's voice has been given an art form by the contemporary writer Narayan Gangopadhyay in his novel 'Amavasyaar Gan'. Narayan Gangopadhyay wrote the biographical novel based on the life of eighteenth century poet Bharatchandra. Narayan Gangopadhyay has selected the period of literary pursuits of Bharatchandra's life and brought the self-torment and self-deprecation of a black artist before the reader. In the novel, the writer talks about Bharatchandra's abysmal dedication to artistry, the distorted form of art and the degenerate form of art when it is placed under the rule of money or infatuation. He has highlighted the essence of art of all times. Bharatchandra's arti is the arti of poets-literature-artists of all times. Narayan Gangopadhyay has portrayed him as an artist and the pain of an artist in the novel.
