Abstract

The concept of family is not static in either the Indian or Western context; rather, it evolves continuously over time. Moreover, the purpose and function of family life differ significantly between these cultural frameworks. In India, family life is integral to the four āśramas - brahmacarya (student life), gārhasthya (householder life), vānaprastha (hermit stage), and sannyāsa (renunciation). Each āśrama aims to guide an individual towards spiritual liberation. The gārhasthya āśrama, or householder stage, is particularly significant as it involves fulfilling familial duties and responsibilities, which are seen as essential steps towards attaining mokṣa, or liberation from material bondage.

         In contrast, the Western concept of family centers on different foundational purposes. The primary motivations for forming a family in the Western context typically include the marital relationship, procreation, and the upbringing of children. Here, family life is often viewed through the lenses of companionship, sexual fulfillment, and the nurturing and maintenance of offspring.

         This paper aims to highlight the importance of the Indian family structure within the context of morality. It begins by exploring the traditional understanding of family in ancient India, emphasizing its spiritual and moral objectives. The discussion then delves into the role of marriage as the cornerstone of family life, the responsibilities that come with familial roles, and the moral imperatives that guide these duties. Through this analysis, the paper seeks to underscore the unique moral framework that underpins the Indian concept of family.
