Abstract

Stories, tales, rhymes, songs etc, have been learned orally in Santali language since long ago. Literature in this language started much later. The initiation phase began at the hands of the English missionaries. But the first Santal who wrote and published books on his own efforts was Majhi Ramdas Tudu. Name of the book written by him is 'Kherwal Vansha Dharam Puthi'. Ramdas Tudu presents the mythology, customs and traditional stories of the Santals in this book. Different in small episodes Sometimes the stories are told through songs he narrated many stories. In the book Santal society has distinctive social, cultural and although words of religious practice are found, Bengali the influence of Purana can be seen in some places.
