Abstract

The outlining of vaishnavism in Tarashankar Bandopadhyay’s literary craftsmanship has occurred recurrently. It can be said, in his personal life he has never been away from vaishnavism. This tenacity is conspicuous in his authorship. The expression of vaishnavism is vivid in his novels (‘Radha’ 1959, ‘Raikamal’ 1935) to short stories. For example, ‘Rasakali’, ‘Malachandan’, ‘Harano Sur’, ‘Prasadmala’, ‘Itimoddhe’ etc. have witnessed the mark of the Brahmin influence. In this essay, mainly the aspects of Brahmin influence in short stories will be discussed. The short story ‘Rasakali’, is primarily written with the backdrop of the brahmin lifestyle. Therefore, various aspects of Brahmin society have been reflected in this masterpiece. The writer has shown his prowess in crafting a beautiful love affair to the use of music in it. Moreover, conflicts in characters, their behaviours and conversions, all these things are attached to the 'Vaishnav Padabali'. Even in ‘Harano Sur’, the ups and downs in the married life of Nonipal and Giri, the attraction of Giri towards Kodi, i.e., from Giri’s flaw to his realisation have the Brahmin influence as the backdrop. To express the attitude of the characters, the writer has included quotations from Gyandas. Apart from that, in the short story ‘Prasadmala’, the inner conflicts of Gopal and the Lalita are inspired from vaishnavism. Furthermore, Gopal wished to get married to a brahmin girl Lalita by leaving his home at the village. The music of this short story is also ‘Vaishnav padabali’. Along with these short stories, we can also get the influence of vaishnavism in ‘Malachandan’ and ‘Itimoddhe’.
