Abstract

Youdhisthir Majee’s story ‘Singbonga Desh’ is a biography of an unsung tribal hero of Indian history. The name of that tribal hero was Gonoo Pingua. He was one of the leaders in Sepoy Mutiny of Singhbhum. King Arjun Singh of Porahat in Singhbhum appointed him as Sardar. Gonoo Pingua formed his own group by uniting the indigenous communities. His life was filled with valour though he led a life of proverty and sorrow. But he is a deprived hero in the history of India. Only a few recent historians and researchers have highlighted his heroism. There are no literary texts written on his biography in Bengali language. Purulia’s renowned researcher and writer Youdhisthir Majee has written a story about the rebellion of such a little-known heroic tribal leader. In this story the author has recorded many unknown facts about the Sepoy Mutiny and Gonoo Pingua in Singhbhum region. As a result, the story ‘Singbonga Desh’ has not only become a literature but also a historical document.
