Abstract

Indian polymath Rabindranath Tagore and rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, without a doubt, are considered two of the greatest spokesmen in the history of bengali literature. Needless to say, Nazrul used to respect Rabindranath which knows no bounds. Then again, everyone knows their conflicting ideas & disagreements over few of the topics. On December 13, 1927, Surendranath Dasgupta was one of the most renowned professors at Presidency College, Calcutta. Basically, he felicitated Rabindranath Tagore at the newly formed "Rabindra-Parishad" function in his college. Thenceforth, Rabindranath delivered a speech in response to the reception. On that speech, Rabindranath Tagore strongly comdemned the usage of the Persian (Farsi) word 'Khun' in the sense of blood in Bengali. That's the reason why Kazi Nazrul Islam considered himself to be the target of Tagore and wrote, 'Barar Piriti Balir Bandh' because a few years ago, on May 22, 1926, he had read Rabindranath a poem titled 'Kandari Hushiyar'. In that poem, there is the usage of the word 'Khun' which is used in the sense of blood. However, Rabindranath did not respond to the composition of 'Barar Piriti Balir Bandh'. Pramatha Choudhuri, one of the influential figures of bengali literature, took the responsibility of answering. He wrote in response to Kazi Nazrul's essay, 'Banga Shahitye Khuner Mamla'. Then, his article was published in the 'Shaptahik Atma Shakti' on 3rd of February, 1928. After that, the tide of criticism from both parties was observed in the letters and books of the critics. Later on, Kazi Nazrul Islam was not the target of Rabindranath Tagore's speech. Although he criticized the works of Kazi Nazrul Islam, he was forced to agree on many issues. In a nutshell, I tried to review and discuss their works refuting each other's allegations.
