Abstract

Magic realism is one of the most widely praised and discussed narrative techniques in modern literary discourse. It is not a literary movement, but a literary style. The question of how ‘Magic’ and ‘Realism’ two contradictory elements coexist within the same frame makes us ponder. ‘Magic’ and ‘Realism’ both have different foundations; when placed side-by-side, these two subjects are never the same, nor are they supposed to be. However, the harmonious blend of the two opposite poles of ‘Magic’ and ‘Realism’ is noticeable in the term ‘Magic Realism’. After the term ‘Magic Realism’ used by Franz Roh in 1825, was applied to painting, complexity arose among ‘Magic Realism,’ ‘Magical Realism,’ and ‘Marvelous Realism’. However, ‘Magic Realism’ reached the global audience by following the stream of magic realism prevalent in Latin America. Among the various elements of magic realism, the most notable element or characteristic is the ‘transformation’ method or ‘metamorphosis’. Through transformation, the boundaries between reality and imagination, or reality and the surreal, are erased. While magical realism was popularized and spred by foreign influence, the abundant application of the transformation method can be observed much earlier in the Bengali Manasamangal kavya of the middle Ages.
