Abstract

Samaresh Majumdar entered the world of writing with the publication of his short story ‘Antaratma’ (1967) in desh patrika. Subsequently, he became a renowned writer of Bengali fiction. In addition to timeless novels like ‘Uttaradhikar’, ‘Kalbela’, ‘Kalpurush’ trilogy novels and ‘Satkahan’, he also wrote numerous short stories. In his stories, on the one hand, the life of the metropolis and on the other hand, the people of North Bengal have repeatedly come up. The author spent his childhood in Dooars in North Bengal. As result the tea gardens of Dooars, the jungle of Khutimari, the jungle of Chapramari, the Angravasa river, the Teesta river are present in his stories. He has also highlighted the life of the Madeshiya workers of the Dooars tea gardens and the culture of the tea gardens in the stories ‘Zayga’, ‘Tritiy Nayan’ and ‘Jaler Pran’. He has also expressed the struggling life of the lower class people on the banks of the Teesta River in his stories ‘Janani’, ‘Char, Shahar and Ekti Bekuf’ and ‘Annaprashan’. He has not only talked about the life of the lower class, but also shown them the way to hope for survival. In his story ‘Octopus’ the solidarity of humans with the wild animal elephant is found. He has repeatedly returned to North Bengal in choosing the subject of his stories. Because North Bengal was the pull of his soul. His stories, on the one hand, depic the struggling lives of various tribes of North Bengal and on the other hand, their use of language. The author was aware of the times. As a result, the touch of modernity and change is noticeable in his stories. Innovative social thinking is one of the aspects of his stories. He never thought about the form of the story, rather the subject of the story inspired him to write.
