Abstract

Abanindranath Tagore's story 'Shiladitya' features three adolescent characters. Through an analysis of the behavioral aspects of these characters, we will attempt to understand the characteristics and psychology of adolescence. Abnormalities are evident in the characters' behavior. In searching for the reasons behind this unusual behavior, we will delve into the world of psychology. We can examine how the characters in the story are influenced by the psychological 'theory of needs'. The story's characters can be analyzed to understand how needs influence an individual's behavior. According to psychology, the fulfillment of needs has a positive impact on behavior, while the non-fulfillment of needs has a negative impact. We will apply the theory of needs to the adolescent characters in the story.  The story demonstrates the kind of mentality at play behind Subhaga's desire to live, her longing for death, her desire for a child, and her fear of death. Gayeb's behavior changes due to his lack of paternal identity. We will discuss how psychologically sound Gayeb's angry behavior is.
