Abstract
Sulekha Sanyal emerged in the field of women's liberation by choosing the position of women in the 1940s and 50s as her subject. She appeared in Bengali literature amidst the world war, riots, independence movement, black marketing, and chaotic situations. As a short story writer, she clearly demonstrated that a woman is not just a woman, but a human being with rights equal to a man. Sulekha Sanyal was born on June 15, 1928. Her childhood was spent in the conservative environment of a landlord family in Korokodi, a remote village in the Faridpur district. Due to social conservatism, Sulekha had to pass her Matriculation exam by studying at home instead of attending school. The long-standing customs, superstitions, and restrictions of a conservative society could not suppress her. Breaking away from these societal norms, she stepped onto the path of women's liberation. Later, on December 4, 1962, she passed away from leukemia. In her personal life, Sulekha had to endure the traditional agony caused by society-imposed customs and restrictions. Therefore, entering the world of literature, she sought to highlight the position of women and strive for their liberation. Primarily through her short stories, she manifested the repressed and neglected status of women. Not only that, she endeavored to establish women with equal competence and dignity to men by providing them with education, freedom, rights, and financial solvency. Herein lies Sulekha Sanyal's achievement in women's liberation within Bengali literature.
