Abstract

Baul Fakir philosophy is a treasure of Bengali’s spiritual life. The meaning of the word 'Baul' is both indefinite and vast. Bauls have various divisions and categories. Baul-Fakirism is not a religion but a form of spiritual practice. In essence, it is a way of life, a path of joyful spiritual discipline. Generally speaking, Baul Fakirs are a community of folk spiritual practitioners from Bangladesh (East and West Bengal). Opposed to caste systems and religious rituals, these practitioners are rebellious, worldly, body-oriented, humanist, and materialist. They are propagators of humanistic philosophy and worshippers of 'rasa-rati' (the essence of love and passion). This spiritual practice is non-scriptural, folk-based, and orally transmitted, involving a form of conjugal yoga practice passed down through the guru-disciple lineage. In one sense, this practice is a pursuit of equality and friendship, and in another sense, it is the pursuit of the 'Man of the Heart.' The main goal of this practice is the realization of the Supreme Being, or the 'Man of the Heart,' through the dual 'form' of 'Prakriti-Purusha' (Nature and the Supreme Being). Human life is of utmost importance to the Baul Fakirs. This spiritual practice begins with desire. Only after conquering desire does the practice begin through the pursuit of love. According to Baul Fakirs, the human body is a microcosm of the universe. The universe resides within the body's vessel. The Supreme Being resides within the human body, whom the Baul Fakirs call the 'Man of the Heart.' He can be attained through human love. This Supreme Being can be attained only by transcending from 'form' consciousness to 'essential' consciousness. Baul Fakirs spend their entire lives in search of this being. The writer Dhananjay Ghoshal is known as one of the prominent poets, storytellers, and playwrights of our time. He is a well-known name in the world of radio plays. His book 'AchinPakhi O Onyanya Galpo' (The Unknown Bird and Other Stories) depicts the lives of Baul Fakirs. He realistically portrays the various joys and sorrows of their lives, as well as the diverse impacts of their joyful and painful experiences. The stories primarily focus on the lives of Baul Fakirs from Rangamati in Birbhum, West Bengal. These stories feature various themes, including a foreign woman who is a devotee of Baul music, someone who aspires to be a Baul but fails, a disciple's devotion and dedication to their guru, and contrasting perspectives on life, including one filled with greed and worldly desires. On one hand, the stories are captivating and enjoyable due to their portrayal of the diverse life styles of Baul fakirs and their unique philosophy and spiritual practices; on the other hand, they are also rendered beautifully and realistically through the brushstrokes of reality.
