Abstract

Dibyendu Palit is an important writer in twentieth-century Bengali literature. He wrote many short stories about the lives of middle-class people in Bengal. His stories are set during the time after worldwar two, when life became very difficult for many families. Money problems, job insecurity, and social changes made daily life hard. During this time, men tried hard to earn money and support their families, while women often had to give up their own dreams and wishes to keep the family together. In Dibyendu Palit’s stories, women play a very important role. He shows them as real people with feelings, thoughts, and struggles. Many of the women in his stories belong to middle-class families and face many problems in their daily lives, which makes them so real. Two main problems faced by women can be seen in Palit’s stories, the first is the existence of social aspects, and the second is physical and mental existence on her own. Many women in Palit’s stories feel lonely and sad inside. Sometimes they are unable to share their feelings with anyone. Their dreams, hopes, and desires remain unfulfilled, which makes them frustrated. Palit’s women also struggle to understand their own identity and purpose in life. Sometimes, he uses his female characters to show the normal life of middle-class families. He describes them in simple daily activities and small moments of pain and joy. At other times, he reveals the deep thoughts and hidden feelings that lie within a woman’s heart. Through these stories, readers can gain insight into the silent strength and patience of women. Overall, Dibyendu Palit presents women in a very natural and realistic way. His female characters are not perfect, but they are true to real life. Through them, he helps readers understand the struggles and sacrifices of middle-class women in Bengali society.
