Abstract

Tilottama Majumdar is a socially conscious writer. Society plays a vital role in her literature, especially in short stories. Gender exploitation is one of the aspects of social problems that have become very prominent in Tilottama Majumdar's short stories. Although this issue is very old, it exists in the present society also. In a general sense, gender issues refer to social exploitation and oppression based on gender, mainly by patriarchal society. In this research paper we are discussing the short stories 'Maya', 'Amravati O Sera Putuler Golpa’, 'Balkal' etc. In these stories, we find how women are constantly exploited and deprived by male dominating society. With time, the concept and direction of this ‘gender discrimination’ has also changed. Women who were exploited and oppressed for so long, in modern times, some of them have become exploiters and oppressors by misusing their femininity. Even in some cases, women are constantly exploiting men also for their own self-interest through jealousy, lies, deceit and delusion. In our research work we will focus on these areas that how Tilottama Majumdar portrayed all these gender based social issues in her selected stories and enriched the bengali literature.
