Abstract

The decade of the 1970s marks a phase of intense transition in the evolution of the Bengali short story. Within this dynamic socio-literary milieu, a group of writers infused new perspectives into short fiction by breaking away from the confines of routine life. Their narratives turned towards the inner world of rural society, examining the thoughts, customs, everyday practices, and inherited notions of lineage and aristocratic pride that shaped village life. Bhagirath Mishra himself acknowledged that the historical forces which instilled a spirit of resistance among the writers of the 1970s and 1980s also shaped his own creative consciousness, as he was inevitably a product of that era.

           In Mishra’s short stories, content and technique are deeply rooted in the soil, consistently carrying the scent of rural life—an approach that may be described as a form of comprehensive naturalisation. Mishra maintains that village life continues to exist distinctly apart from urban culture, with visible differences in behaviour, language, and social values. This distinction is vividly portrayed in Banediyana (Aristocratic Lineage), where impoverished and physically weakened characters cling desperately to the remnants of their ancestral prestige. Like a dying lamp struggling to stay lit, they engage in daily struggles merely to protect the illusion of lineage, while grappling with the harsh realities of hunger and deprivation.

          The narrative texture of Banediyana evokes an archaic rural atmosphere, steeped in the earthy essence of a fading past. The sustained use of humour enhances the aesthetic depth of the story. While Dinanath remains emotionally invested in preserving the fragile honour of aristocracy, his daughter openly recognises their ordinariness. In this context, aristocracy emerges as a superficial mask—concealing inner hardship rather than providing genuine dignity. Through this portrayal, Bhagirath Mishra critiques a stagnant rural society that survives on hollow pride and unproductive aristocratic nostalgia. As he reflects, “What is visible is only a fragment; beyond it lies an unseen expanse, without which perception remains incomplete and unreal.”

           The narrative gradually uncovers the stark poverty hidden beneath the façade of rural aristocracy. The female protagonist is brought down from imagined ideals to lived reality, allowing her to dismantle her father’s illusions of grandeur and redefine simplicity as a narrative strength. Consequently, inherited pride loses its significance when confronted with authenticity and honesty. Ultimately, the story advocates progression through acceptance of present realities, while the past lingers merely as a faint, ironic memory. By rejecting elitist notions of purity and superiority, the narrative arrives at a natural, humane sensibility that resonates throughout the text. Through the central characters, Mishra subtly yet powerfully articulates his inner vision with artistic finesse.
