‘শিবরাজবিজয়’ উপন্যাসে বর্ণিত তৎকালীন সামাজিক চিত্র/ The Contemporary Social Picture as Depicted in the Novel Shivraj Vijay

Abstract

The novel Shivraj Vijay, written by Shri Ambikadatt Vyas, presents a painful and distressing picture of the social conditions of its time. During this period, the lives of the Hindus were extremely insecure and filled with fear. The novel exposes the vulnerable condition of the Hindu community, the inactive and irresponsible lifestyle of the rulers, and the overall atmosphere of social terror. In contrast, it also highlights the luxurious dress, food habits, and extravagant lifestyle of the Mughal rulers.

         The Mughals continuously oppressed the Hindu population, beginning with the destruction of temple idols and extending to severe physical and mental torture. Mughal military commanders lived in excessive luxury, and their character is portrayed as morally degraded. Wealth and women were their primary sources of pleasure. Even ascetics were subjected to persecution, and many temples were converted into taverns. The Mughal emperors showed no respect for Hindu religious objects or sacred places. Driven by greed for wealth, they repeatedly plundered India. Hindus were treated brutally, like animals, without any sense of compassion or mercy, and forced religious conversions were common.

         As fear, hesitation, and inactivity spread among the Hindu population, Maharashtrian ruler Shivaji emerged as a source of courage and inspiration. He awakened bravery, self-confidence, patriotism, and devotion to the motherland among his soldiers. Shivaji skilfully applied intelligence and strategy in warfare and made efforts to unite other Hindu rulers. However, those Hindus who flattered the Mughals survived only through submission.

         India had almost become enslaved under Mughal rule; only Maharashtra and its ruler Shivaji remained independent. The novel demonstrates how literature reflects social reality, strengthens patriotism, and inspires the desire for freedom. Thus, Shivraj Vijay provides clear guidance toward national awakening and action.
