Abstract

Shahidullah Kaiser’s novel Sangsaptak reflects the author’s mature artistic imagination and creative mastery. In portraying the intimate realities of Muslim society, he analysis individual resistance as well as familial and social conflicts. Due to its variant thematic and structural features, the novel defies easy categorization and cannot be confined to any single literary genre such as political, social, or historical fiction. Within its broad narrative canvas, the novel depicts the lived realities of the lower-and middle-class communities of two villages in Bangladesh, alongside vivid portrayals of urban life in Kolkata and Dhaka. Moreover, the narrative unfolds against the backdrop of major historical events, including the Second World War, famine, communal riots, and the politics of the Partition. By focusing on a limited social group, the novelist succeeds in representing the life patterns and transformations of the broader population of Bangladesh, ultimately suggesting the possibility of a resilient and struggle-oriented future.
