Abstract

Literature is the mirror of society—this idea is especially true in the context of Bengali literature. Society is constantly changing, and along with these changes, literature has reflected transformations in human life, thoughts, and emotions. The position of women is one of the most important areas of this transformation. In earlier Bengali literature, women were mainly portrayed as ideal figures shaped by male dependence and patriarchal viewpoints. In contrast, in contemporary literature, women appear as self-aware, protest-oriented, and independent individuals. Writers have presented these changing images of women through their works.

When we compare earlier and contemporary literature, we can clearly see deep changes in women’s social position, mental world, sense of freedom, and awareness of rights. From Bankim Chandra to present-day writers, Bengali fiction has continuously discussed women’s various problems, and in some cases, ways to overcome those problems. This struggle has continued in literature for a long time, but the question remains—have these problems been fully solved? Perhaps some progress has been made. The miserable condition of women in the past has certainly changed, but the present crisis is different. Today’s crisis creates new and more complex challenges for women.

Keeping these contemporary crises in mind, this paper focuses on the varied presentation of women in the novels of Ramananath Ray. Ramananath Ray (3 January 1940 – 15 march, 2021) became popular as an important short story writer of the “anti-establishment” movement of the 1960s. He emerged as a novelist in the 1980s. His first novel was Chobir Songe Dekha (Meeting with a Picture, 1980).

In Ramananath Ray’s novels, we find a realistic portrayal of the struggles of upper- and middle-class life, economic insecurity, and moral crisis. His works mainly deal with the social, political, and economic tensions of modern urban life, unemployment, broken relationships, conflict between village and city, crisis of values, and women’s issues. He portrays the changing life struggles of married and unmarried women, widows, self-dependent women, housewives, and domestic workers.

Ramananath Ray also highlights issues such as women’s education, workplace participation, politics, reproductive rights, and property rights. He presents contemporary women’s food habits and clothing as part of social change. In his writing, female characters no longer silently tolerate injustice; instead, they learn to fight for their rights. He also depicts women facing broken relationships and crises of self-identity. In his novels, women do not accept patriarchy unquestioningly; rather, they challenge it. The writer presents the life crises of modern men and women together and also shows the changing condition of women in the context of village versus city life.
