Abstract

Ramapada Chowdhury was a 20th-21st century literary artist. The period of his writings was from the second half of the 20th century to the first decade of the 21st century. So he can be called the writer of two centuries. Stories, novels, essays, travel literature are his writings. However, the rest of the genres like the practice of short stories and novels do not shed light in that way. He has made life experience the subject of his stories and novels. As he did not have to resort to imagination, the stories became much more vivid and realistic. Ramapada Chowdhury has mainly highlighted the Second World War and its aftermath as a background in thinking about the subject of novels and short stories. Ramapada Chowdhury is a witness of how the environment of Kolkata including the city started to change due to the terrible impact of the Second World War. He joined the Presidency College in Calcutta during the war situation and started living in the hostel there. So he could easily see how the society of Calcutta and its surroundings started to change after the Second World War and its aftermath. The breakdown of financial infrastructure is largely responsible for this change. Scarcity, famine, inflation, unemployment make people self-centered and narrow minded. The common Bengali suffering from insecurity cannot think of anything but his own piece. A family of only three was formed with parents and only one child. On the other hand, the tendency to show 'status' increases. In order to maintain their class in the society, the abnormal girl of her house is brought to a psychiatric hospital, so that the society, as well as neighbours, relatives do not have to fall into any disrepute. Do not be disrespectful to people. It becomes more important to maintain the family honor properly in the people's society than the health of their daughter. All these social and emotional changes will be discussed through Ramapada Chowdhury's two novels 'Kharij' and 'Lajja'.
