Abstract

In this essay, I discuss Rabindranath Tagore’s contribution to Bengali children’s literature through his poetry collection Shishu Bholanath. I believe that Tagore did not write about children from an adult point of view; rather, he entered the child’s mental world and wrote from within it. I see childhood as a special stage of life full of imagination, emotion, curiosity, and freedom, and Tagore’s poems beautifully reflect this understanding.

           I focus especially on the role of imagination in a child’s life. In Shishu Bholanath, I find that nature — rivers, rain, birds, trees, and open fields — becomes a part of the child’s emotional world. Nature is not just background scenery; it actively shapes the child’s joy, playfulness, and sense of wonder. I notice that Tagore’s simple language and gentle rhythm match the natural way children think and feel.

          I also examine the mother–child relationship in these poems. I observe that the mother represents care, safety, and emotional comfort. The child expresses love, dependence, complaints, and affection freely toward the mother. Through this relationship, I understand how Tagore reveals the emotional depth of childhood.

          Another important idea I highlight is freedom. I find that children in Shishu Bholanath wish to escape strict rules, school discipline, and social control. They long to run, play, dream, and explore the world without restrictions. I interpret this as Tagore’s belief that creativity and emotional growth cannot flourish under rigid discipline.

          I further argue that Tagore’s children are realistic, not idealized. They are playful, emotional, sometimes naughty, and sometimes confused — just like real children. This realism, I believe, gives psychological depth and social relevance to the poems.

          Finally, I conclude that Shishu Bholanath is not only children’s literature but also literature for adults. It helps us understand childhood more deeply and allows us to reflect on freedom, creativity, nature, and human emotions through the eyes of a child.
