Abstract

Riots are a terrible event in social life. The riots broke out between the two communities, Hindus and Muslims. The riots of 1946 soon turned into Calcutta communal violence. As a result of this incident, hellish killings, looting, fires etc. Continued between Hindus and Muslims in India at that time and in the city of Calcutta. Somewhere the fire of riots is burning. The image is as red as blood and horrible. As a result of the riots, on the one hand, Hindus chanted ‘Jaihind’ and ‘Vandemataram’, while on the other hand, Muslims chanted ‘Ladke Lenge Pakistan’. The image of such a riot is captured in Nabendu Ghosh’s novel ‘Fierce Lane’. Our topic is Nabendu Ghosh’s novel ‘Fierce Lane’: Context Riots. In the novel, we can see the attack of Muslims on Hindus and on the other hand, the pictures of Hindu oppression on Muslims. Hindus and Muslims have been in conflict with each other.

Fierce Lane is the name of a street. This fierce lane stretches like an ugly python from Boubazar to Kalutola. As the picture of the life of a man named Ajmal has been caught in the novel, his humanity is worth noting. There are some Hindus living in a house next to Ajmal, and Ajmal developed a brotherly relationship among those Hindus. One such person with whom a brotherly relationship develops is called Paresh. When Paresh is in danger due to riots, Ajmal saves him from danger. The novel portrays how Ajmal, a Muslim, finally gives his life to shelter the Hindu family in his home and keep them alive. As a result of the riots, the condition of Hindus is deplorable as well as the condition of Muslims. In the novel, there is a man named Taj Mohammed who is known as gangster in the society. This person is killing, looting and torturing all Hindus. Taj Muhammad and his followers became so violent that all the Hindus were slaughtered with daggers. One such person named Panchanan was brutally stabbed to death by Taj Muhammad and his followers. At the end we will see Taj Mohammed as a Muslim stabbing a Muslim named Ajmal. Nabendu Ghosh wants to show in this novel that we have to win humanity, not riots and divisions.
