Abstract

Al Mahmud is one of the most vibrant and significant poets of Bangladesh. He occupies an important place in the tradition of modern Bengali poetry. While his poems are deeply infused with the earthy fragrance of rural Bengal, they simultaneously reflect modern sensibilities, politics, human anguish, and lived reality. Although his poetic journey began within an influenced and inherited framework, he soon developed an independent vision in opposition to colonial modes of thought and literary practice. As a result, through new ideas and a fresh poetic language, he played a bold role in creating vitality and diversity in Bangladeshi literature. Al Mahmud is not merely a romantic poet; he is a powerful voice animated by the consciousness of his time. His language is fluent, his imagery vivid, and his metaphors and symbols have added new dimensions to Bengali poetic expression. Through familiar scenes of rural life, he reveals the complexities and conflicts of urban existence. In poetry collections such as ‘Sonali Kabin’, ‘Kafela’, and ‘Mayabi Porda Dule Otho’, the depth and beauty of modern poetry find profound expression. This essay analyzes various manifestations of modernism in Al Mahmud’s poetry, including individual freedom, social tensions, religious sensibility, love and desire, and questions of existence. It demonstrates how Al Mahmud’s poetry has created a new current in Bengali literature, where tradition and modernity merge to form a unique poetic world. Therefore, it can be said that Al Mahmud’s poetry stands as a meaningful and accomplished expression of modernism.
